Geographic Information Systems use computers, associated hardware, people, and software to collect, manage, assess, and visualize spatial phenomena- essentially helping us to better understand and interact with the world around us. It’s no wonder then that Money Magazine lists GIS Analyst among its Top 100 Jobs in the United States and the U.S. Department of Labor reports that employment numbers in GIS are growing and continued growth is anticipated. The types of analysis that can be conducted with GIS include: transportation routing, crime mapping, hazard mitigation, neighborhood planning, biological assessments, demographic trend analysis, environmental studies, historical mapping, and groundwater modeling, to name a few.

GIS Mission

GIS Services’ mission is to leverage interdisciplinary collaborations in the use of geospatial technology (GIS, Remote Sensing, GPS) for research, education, and community service.

GIS Vision

The University of Michigan-Flint GIS Services will:

  • Cultivate opportunities for students and researchers to complete innovative, high-level GIS analysis and research.
  • Create an avenue of geospatial education for K-12 students, college students, and other professionals.
  • Promote the use of GIS as a tool to help solve existing and future challenges in Flint and the surrounding regions.

GIS Details

  • The staff and research assistants associated with GIS Services have 20+ years of experience in GIS development and applications. All of us have a common interest and expertise in GIS, cartography, and spatial analysis.
  • GISS conducts and disseminates GIS education and research to meet the needs of local businesses, non-profit organizations, and government offices, which will increase your organization’s capacity to use GIS tools efficiently and effectively.
  • GISS provides faculty and students with the resources and expertise needed to enhance their spatial education and facilitate the incorporation of GIS technology into their disciplines.
  • GISS uses ESRI ArcGIS software for most GIS use, as well as related hardware (large-format printing and GPS) and associated remote sensing and cartographic software packages.
