Resume Tips

  • Style of resume being used: Chronological, Functional, or Mixed 
  • Be consistent 
  • Bold and italic font is used to highlight items 
  • Content on your resume should be written in descending order
  • Be sure to use words correctly
  • Format dates September 2018, Sept. 2018, 9/2018 or 9-2018
  • Spell out words before using abbreviations
  • Contact information should be current
  • Use a professional email address
  • Spacing needs to be consistent 
  • Bullet points are written as descriptive phrases using action words. 
  • Obtain a list of action words, Google “Action Words”
  • Do not use “I” statements
  • For current descriptions, action words need to be written in the present tense
  • Formatting
  • Abbreviations 
  • Spacing 
  • Spelling
  • Listing content in descending order
  • Employer address, contact info
  • References should be placed on a separate page. Not required!
