Requesting Accommodations
DASS is committed to providing equal access and support to all disabled students. We are here to assist you throughout your educational journey if you require accommodations to ensure equal access. Follow the steps below to request accommodations:
- Familiarize Yourself with DASS: Take some time to explore our website and learn about the resources and services we offer. This will help you understand how our office operates and the types of accommodations available.
- Gather Documentation: To request accommodations, you must provide appropriate documentation of your disability. This documentation should come from a qualified professional, such as a licensed healthcare provider or psychologist, and it should clearly outline the impact of your disability on your academic functioning. For more information on what constitutes appropriate documentation, see our Documentation Guidelines.
- Complete the Accommodation Request Form: This is the first step in officially requesting accommodations. If you have the documentation ready, you can submit it along with the accommodation request form. DASS will review your request and send you a follow-up email inviting you to schedule an intake appointment. You can schedule an in-person, video, or phone meeting. Email options are also available if you prefer.
- Discuss Your Accommodation Needs: During the intake appointment, be prepared to discuss your disability, its impact on your academics, and the specific accommodations you believe will help you succeed. DASS will guide you through the process, answer any questions you may have, and offer suggestions if needed.
- Submit Documentation: If you haven’t already submitted documentation, you can do so in person, through email, or via your Accommodate portal. Remember to keep a copy of your documentation for your records.
- Review and Evaluation: DASS will review your documentation and evaluate your accommodation request. This process may take some time, so we appreciate your patience. We may also contact you or your healthcare provider for additional information or clarification.
- Accommodation Plan: Once your documentation has been reviewed, we will determine the appropriate accommodations based on your needs. We will develop an accommodation plan outlining the specific accommodations that have been approved for you. You will receive a copy of this plan via email, and you will also be sent an accommodation letter via email to share with faculty.
- Communicate with Faculty: You must share your accommodation letter with your instructors. In order for your accommodations to be implemented, you must discuss them with your instructors as soon as possible. Your instructor is not required to provide your accommodations until you and your instructor have discussed their implementation. Maintaining open lines of communication with instructors and DASS staff will ensure a smooth and successful academic experience.
- Ongoing Support: DASS provides ongoing support throughout your time at UM-Flint. If you encounter any issues with your accommodations or require adjustments, please don’t hesitate to contact us. We are dedicated to working with you to ensure that you have equal access and an inclusive learning environment.
Remember, requesting accommodations is an essential step towards ensuring your academic experience. We encourage you to utilize the available resources and work collaboratively with DASS. We are committed to supporting your needs and creating an inclusive educational experience for all students.
