University of Michigan-Flint Educates Rural Nurses Program
The University of Michigan-Flint School of Nursing is excited to introduce the University of Michigan-Flint Educates Rural Nurses Program, known as UM-FERN.
This program is designed to prepare nurses to meet the health care needs of rural and underserved communities in Michigan’s Thumb region. Our mission is to enhance educational opportunities for students from Huron, Lapeer, Sanilac and Tuscola counties, empowering them to serve locally and improve health care quality in these areas.

With the support of a substantial grant from the Health Resources and Services Administration, UM-FERN is designed to increase the nursing workforce in rural Michigan through specialized educational pathways and innovative training.
Key Objectives of UM-FERN
- Increase Enrollment & Graduation: Provide funding support for local students to complete prerequisite and accelerated Bachelor of Science in Nursing programs.
- Specialized Training: Provide students with opportunities to gain specialized acute and long-term care training within Michigan’s Thumb region.
- Accelerated Pathway: Implement an accelerated program tailored to increase nursing staff specifically in acute and long-term care settings.
- Faculty Development: Establish dedicated clinical faculty and preceptorships at local health care facilities to support students through their education and into employment.

UM-FERN was awarded an HRSA grant totaling $3,938,111, which means it offers substantial financial support, including tuition assistance, for eligible students dedicated to serving Michigan’s underserved communities.

Admission Requirements
The UM-FERN program is open to students across a wide range of educational experiences. To start the program, you must meet the following requirements.
- Be a current resident of Huron, Sanilac, Lapeer or Tuscola county.
- Complete all general education requirements prior to the first clinical semester.
- Complete all prerequisite courses with a grade of C or better.
- Have a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0 in all prior college-level courses.
- Have a minimum 3.0 GPA in science prerequisite courses.
