Douglas G. Knerr, PhD

Provost and Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs

Douglas Knerr serves as Provost and Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs and Professor of History at the University of Michigan-Flint. Prior to joining UM-Flint in July 2015, Provost Knerr served as Executive Vice President and University Provost at Roosevelt University in Chicago, Illinois. He has maintained a committment to academic excellence and student success throughout his career as a faculty member and academic administrator. Provost Knerr is dedicated to innovation in academic programs and instructional methods and has the privilege of leading a team of talented academic leaders at the University of Michigan-Flint who work tirelessly in service to our students and to our mission.  As scholars, researchers and educators, the entire faculty of UM-F create a true community of learners who transform the lives of our students and the fortunes of our region in powerful, innovative and authentic ways.

Dr. Gilia C. Smith
Special Advisor to the Provost

Dr. Smith's responsibilities include representing the Office of the Provost across the University, facilitating communication between the divisions of the university, and supporting the work of the academic deans. Her recent projects include strategic planning, general education, first year experience, program review, and helping to prepare the institution for HLC re-accreditation in 2019. Dr. Smith comes to UM-Flint with a background in academic affairs at Columbia University and a doctorate in Higher Education Research from UM-Ann Arbor.

 

Heidi Zayan
Executive Assistant

Ms. Zayan supports the operations of the Office of the Provost and the academic units reporting to Academic Affairs. She is the primary support for the promotion and tenure process as well as matters pertaining to budget, planning and faculty support.

 

Jill A. Hubbard
Administrative Assistant

Ms. Hubbard is the first person that one sees or talks to when visiting or calling the Office of the Provost. She supports the governing faculty of the University and the event calendar for the Office.
