Crisis Services

During Business Hours:

The CAPS office is available for same-day mental health crisis appointments for students from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday-Friday. These appointments can be conducted in person or remotely.

To ensure appropriate and effective support for students in crisis, students requesting a same-day crisis appointment after 4 p.m. will be referred to our CAPS After Hours service unless the student discloses an active threat of harm to self or others. In this situation, a CAPS clinician will be notified immediately to provide the student with appropriate support.

After Business Hours:

CAPS After Hours provides mental health crisis support to any currently enrolled UM-Flint student or anyone concerned about a UM-Flint student. 

CAPS After Hours is provided to students in conjunction with existing campus and emergency services, such as:

CAPS After Hours is available evenings, weekends, and holidays by calling 810-762-3456 and pressing “0” when prompted.


  • Student has taken recent steps to end their life.
  • Student has serious thoughts of killing themselves. 
  • Student has a current plan to attempt suicide.
  • Student has thoughts of seriously harming or killing someone else.
  • Student is seriously concerned about another student who may be at risk of suicide and/or harming others.
  • Student has recently been physically or sexually assaulted. 
  • Student has had a relative, close friend or animal companion receive a serious diagnosis or has recently died. 
  • Student has not slept in two or more days. 
  • Student is having strange experiences such as hearing voices or seeing things other people do not.
  • Student is experiencing such emotional distress that they have not been able to meet daily responsibilities (for example, not attending class or work).
  • Student has had a severe reaction to a psychiatric medication.
  • Student has witnessed a traumatic event within the last few days.
