Why Earn Your EdD Degree from UM-Flint?

Designed for Working Professionals

UM-Flint’s Doctor of Education degree program is designed to accommodate your busy schedule as a working professional and facilitate your success in the program, our EdD allows you to progress in a part-time format.

The EdD program blends online coursework with a synchronous class held one Saturday per month* and is designed for completion of coursework and advancement to candidacy in two years, and completion of all degree requirements in three to five years.

*Starting in fall 2027, online Saturday Courses will become required in-person sessions for all new and continuing students.

Doctor of Education Program Curriculum

The University of Michigan-Flint’s EdD program offers a robust curriculum that aims to cultivate your knowledge and skills in education research. The curriculum encompasses eight courses (24 credits), which can be completed in two years, and an additional 12 credits focusing on dissertation research, which can be completed in two to three years.

Career Outcomes with an EdD in Education

UM-Flint’s Doctor of Education program is specifically designed for K-12 educators looking to build upon their background and skills and develop research-specific skills.

Furthermore, graduates of the EdD program can pursue careers in higher education as professors, as well as in other roles such as Education Consultant and Education-focused Entrepreneur in non-profit or for-profit organizations.


Admission Requirements

  • Completion of an Education Specialist degree in an education-related program or master’s +30 credits in education or a related field from a regionally accredited institution
  • A minimum overall graduate school grade point average of 3.3 on a 4.0 scale, or 6.0 on a 9.0 scale, or equivalent.
  • At least three years of work experience in a P-16 educational institution or in an education-related position.

Admission decisions are made by faculty of the Education Department. The requirements above are necessary but insufficient for admission; admission is not guaranteed. Depending upon the program size in any given year, admission may be competitive.

  • $55 application fee (non-refundable)*
  • Official transcripts (undergraduate and graduate) from colleges and universities where graduate work was completed as well as those where you completed your bachelor’s degree and/or work toward your teaching and/or administrative certifications. Please read our full transcript policy for more information.
  • For any degree completed at a non-U.S. institution, transcripts must be submitted for an internal credential review. Read International Transcript Evaluation for instructions on how to submit your transcripts for review.
  • If English is not your native language, and you are not from an exempt country, you must demonstrate English proficiency.
  • An essay (no more than two pages): Pursuing an EdD is an indication that you have burning questions about education that you are interested in finding answers to. With this in mind please describe the questions you have and the reasons you are interested in pursuing the answers to those questions.
  • Résumé or Curriculum Vitae
  • Writing sample that demonstrates the following criteria:
    • Demonstrates your ability to construct an academic argument about a topic using appropriate citations. This should not be an opinion piece.
    • Demonstrates your ability to use and reference the work of others to develop and support the argument.
    • Demonstrates your ability to use APA 7th Edition correctly and consistently when appropriate.
    • Demonstrates your writing skills.
    • An academic argument begins with a problem and uses credible evidence from reliable sources (i.e., academic journals) with multiple perspectives to construct a logical stance ending with reasonable solutions.
    • If you completed your EdS at UM-Flint this must be a different writing sample than the one utilized for the EdS application.
  • Two letters of recommendation, both must be from former course instructors who can speak to your writing ability and your interest and curiosity about education.
  • Students from abroad must submit additional documentation.

Admitted students will not be eligible to receive a student (F-1) visa to pursue this degree. Non-U.S. citizens residing outside of the United States may not complete this program online from their home country. If you currently hold a non-immigrant visa and are residing in the United States, please contact the Center for Global Engagement at globalflint@umich.edu for guidance regarding your eligibility.

*Alumni of a UM-Flint graduate program or a Rackham graduate program (any campus) may substitute the Change of Program or Dual Degree Application which requires no application fee.

Application Deadlines

The EdD program only admits for the fall semester. Submit all application materials to the Office of Graduate Programs on, or before, the day of the application deadline. Program faculty review applications twice annually after each of the following dates:

  • Feb. 1 (early deadline for guaranteed consideration for scholarships, grants and assistantships
  • July 1 (final deadline; applications will be accepted on a case-by-case basis after July 1 deadline)
