International Transcript Evaluation
Applicants with international transcripts will have an internal credential evaluation completed by the University of Michigan-Flint to confirm U.S. degree equivalency and GPA conversion (it is not necessary to submit an evaluation from an outside agency such as WES or ECE). The internal evaluation process cannot start until all other required application materials have been received and ‘International Credential Evaluation’ will appear as an incomplete checklist item until UM-Flint has completed processing.
International Transcript Submission Process
Please follow the process below to submit your transcripts. Make one compiled PDF per institution with pages in the following order:
- Diploma (degree certificate) – not the provisional certificate
- Marksheets, if applicable
- Transcript
- Transcript legend/grading scale MUST be included (often on the back of the transcript)
- Transcript evaluation or English translation
Please note the following:
- Ensure that your name and the institution name are not cut off during the scanning process.
- Pages must be rotated to read up-and-down (not sideways); all pages must be clear and legible.
- Do not include secondary school certificates, syllabi, extracurricular certificates, or other non-academic documents in your compiled PDF.
- Do not include password-protected or encrypted documents.
- Maximum file size is 10MB; any documents that need to be submitted separately can be sent as a PDF attachment to FlintGradOffice@umich.edu.
Uploads that do not follow these guidelines may not be accepted and can delay completion of your admission file.
Email the unofficial transcript document to flintgradoffice@umich.edu
The internal evaluation process cannot start until all other required application materials have been received. If all needed materials are submitted by the deadline, the internal evaluation will receive prioritized processing to meet internally established review deadlines.
While unofficial transcripts may be used for an admission decision, any offer of admission will include a hold placed on a student’s record until official transcripts are received. This hold will prevent distribution of financial aid and registration in future semesters; if possible, please have official transcripts sent electronically to flintgradoffice@umich.edu, as they will arrive sooner and allow us to make an admission decision as quickly as possible.
Applicants with international transcripts will have an internal evaluation completed. Unofficial copies of transcripts can be submitted for review by emailing them to flintgradoffice@umich.edu. If unofficial transcripts are utilized when making an admission decision, official transcripts must be received by the Office of Graduate Programs by the end of the student’s first semester of enrollment. Failure to comply will prohibit the student from registering for future semesters. The results of the internal evaluation are for internal purposes only and will not be shared with the applicant. When submitting transcripts, be sure to include your transcript legend/grading scale with the document submission to prevent delays in completing the evaluation.
International Student: All Required Documents
Academic records listing all courses and grades and proof of degree (diploma, degree certificate, diploma supplement, etc.) must be submitted. In cases where the original document is in a language other than English, an official English language translation must be provided. English translations must be literal, word-for-word translations in the same format as the original academic record. If your academic institution does not supply an official translation, we will accept an official translation prepared by a certified translation service. Proof of degree awarded must be included, through a posted statement on the transcript or a separate degree certificate/diploma. All documentation received becomes property of the UM-Flint and will not be returned.
Additional documentation may be required based on a specific country or region, including a diploma supplement (Bologna process). Applicants from India, Bangladesh, or Pakistan must submit all individual semester marksheets and/or grade cards indicating all subjects taken and all grades received for all years of post-secondary study. This includes all attempts and all failures you may have received. Your marksheets or grade cards must be issued by the institution responsible for conducting the examinations. You must also submit your consolidated marksheet or consolidated transcript showing the completion of all semesters attended. Consolidated marksheets/transcripts sent without the individual marksheets may not be acceptable. If your school only provides a consolidated marksheet and not individual marksheets, you must also include documentation from your school confirming that individual marksheets are not issued. The document must be on official school letterhead and signed by the school official responsible for issuing academic records.
