Graduate Scholarships

The University of Michigan Alumni Scholarship is a one-time competitive award for graduates of a U-M (any campus) undergraduate program. Each award is $4,000, split equally over two subsequent semesters to be used on the Flint campus.

To be considered for this award, students must have earned their baccalaureate degree from a University of Michigan campus with a minimum 3.25 cumulative GPA. The applicant must be newly admitted to a master’s, specialist, or doctorate program at the University of Michigan-Flint starting in the fall semester. Upon receiving the award, the applicant must maintain at least half-time status (four credits per semester) and a 3.0 GPA to receive the scholarship in the subsequent semester. 

  • Must be a newly admitted, master’s degree-seeking, domestic graduate student for the upcoming fall semester. (Students can/should apply prior to official admission notification.)
    • Specialist and doctoral applicants may be considered based on the volume of applicants. 
  • Must apply for admission for fall no later than June 1, 2024; all supporting application documents also due by June 1. In certain extenuating circumstances, the deadline may be extended. 
  • Selections will begin after April 1. 
  • Minimum cumulative GPA of 3.25 in an undergraduate degree (4.0 scale).
    • Lower cumulative GPAs may be considered based on the volume of applicants. 
  • Upon receiving the award, the applicant must attend at least half-time status (four credits per semester) and maintain a 3.0 GPA to receive the scholarship in the subsequent semester. 
  • Scholarships are applied directly to the student’s account for tuition, mandatory fees, and course-related fees only, not refundable for any other expenses.
  • The selection process includes a review of the applicant’s GPA, intended program, and alumni verification.

The Flint (Genesee County) region is a center of new and emerging businesses, non-profits, and associations.  In order for these organizations to grow and thrive, new leadership must be cultivated and professional development provided. New leaders will need advanced educational tools to support their organizations. Therefore, there is a strong common interest between employers of all types and their next generation of leaders to provide the resources necessary to forge a strong skill-set for these emerging leaders.

The University of Michigan–Flint recognizes this need, accompanied by the value education contributes to our area businesses and communities.  To assist in filling that need, the University of Michigan-Flint has created the Greater Flint Community Leadership Scholarship.

  • Applicant must be newly admitted to University of Michigan–Flint by June 1 in a degree-seeking program at the graduate level (master’s, specialist, or doctoral).
  • Applicants shall be nominated by their employer, (Supervisor or higher administration personnel only).
  • Applicant’s program of study at University of Michigan-Flint needs to be relevant to the position held in the employee capacity as articulated in the letter of nomination by their employer.
  • Applicants who reside in and who are employed by an organization that has a physical location in Genesee County, MI who are not University of Michigan employees are eligible to apply.
  • Scholarship will cover up to $7500.00 per semester for two consecutive, full academic years, or until degree completion, whichever comes first.
  • Scholarship is available for fall, winter, spring, and summer semesters; courses must be applicable to the student’s program of study.
  • The Director of Graduate Programs shall name the scholarship committee on an annual basis who will be responsible for selecting the recipients.
  • The number of scholarships offered per year will depend on available funding and number of qualified applicants.
  • Recipient will commit to fulfilling at least one engagement activity on the campus of University of Michigan-Flint which may consist of serving as a guest lecturer, mentor, or a participant in a recruitment event.
  • Renewal criteria for the second year of the scholarship is based on the prescribed grade point average of the graduate program in which the recipient is enrolled.
  • Recipient must meet all university standards including academic, judicial, and financial (Satisfactory Academic Progress).
  • Recipients who fail to enroll in consecutive semesters (with the exception of spring/summer) will forfeit their scholarship.

Applicants must submit the following materials to be considered for this scholarship:

  • Letter of Nomination from applicant’s supervisor or higher administration personnel.
  • Explanation as to how this degree will further your leadership within the company.

The Global Graduate Merit Scholarship is a merit-based scholarship available to international  graduate students who meet the selection criteria listed below. It is a competitive scholarship  awarded to students admitted for the fall semester who have achieved a high level of academic  success. The Office of Graduate Programs will consider entering international  graduate-level students seeking an “F” visa; no additional application is required. Recipients  must view themselves as cultural ambassadors and are encouraged to participate periodically in  University of Michigan-Flint activities where they engage in cultural sharing or community service activities. 

  • Scholarship applicants must be newly admitted international “F” visa-seeking students  at the University of Michigan-Flint. 
  • Admitted students will be considered starting May 1 for the following fall semester.
  • Minimum recalculated incoming GPA of 3.25 (4.0 scale). 
  • Students must be degree-seeking at the University of Michigan-Flint. 
  • Total scholarship value is up to $10,000. 
  • Scholarship can be awarded up to two years (fall and winter terms only), or until  graduation requirements are met, whichever occurs first. 
  • Renewable with a cumulative GPA of 3.00 at University of Michigan-Flint.
  • Students must maintain full-time status (at least eight credits)* during the fall and  winter semesters of the award year(s).  
  • The total number of scholarships awarded will be dependent upon funds available.  ∙ Scholarships will be applied directly to the student’s tuition account. 
  • International Students are expected to maintain lawful immigration status according to  the guidelines set by U.S. Department of Homeland Security. 
  • If you withdraw or leave UM-Flint for any reason, your scholarship will automatically  terminate. If you plan to leave for a study abroad program or health reasons, you may  write an appeal to have your scholarship postponed for up to one term. 
  • Students, who are on an agency or government scholarship, where full tuition and fees  are covered, are not eligible for this award. 
  • Non-immigrants eligible for need-based financial aid are not eligible for this award.

*Students who meet the following admission conditions must still enroll in at least eight credits as well:  

  1. Enrolled in a Rackham Program (MPA, Liberal Studies, Arts Administration)  
  2. Receive a Graduate Student Research Assistantship

The University of Michigan-Flint reserves the right to reduce, and will restrict the awarding of university-funded  scholarships and grants if a recipient is in receipt of scholarships and/or grants that cover tuition and fees (in full or  part) regardless of the means by which the student is awarded.
