Message from the Vice Provost for Academic Affairs

As the vice provost for academic affairs, my professional portfolio includes broad oversight for a variety of areas, including general education, the Center for Global Engagement, International and Global Studies, The Thompson Center for Learning and Teaching, the Honors Program, MI-ACE, the Common Read initiative, and the Critical Issues in Education conference. This diverse grouping represents a holistic commitment to fostering an inclusive and globally-minded academic community at our university. It reflects our collective efforts toward a positive experience for all students, faculty, and staff.

Since beginning my journey at UM-Flint as a lecturer in 2000, my core values have served as the essential foundation of my professional life — values that emphasize deep connections with students and colleagues, hard work and resilience in the face of adversity, and a steadfast focus on personal and professional growth.

Dr. Sapna Thwaite, Vice Provost for Academic Affairs and Professor of Education

As an educational psychologist, my previous professional roles have ranged from being an accreditation director to an interim dean. My teaching, research and service endeavors continue to center around the foundational belief that identity is integral to leadership development. My research in leadership identity and crisis leadership, informed by my accompanying professional experiences, looks to foster adaptability and endurance within higher education contexts.

Through my service to our campus community over the years, I have strived to create a more inclusive and psychologically safe environment for all. As Brene Brown stated, “Who we are is how we lead.” Therefore, I hope my commitment to intentional and reflective practice will serve as a supportive force for our academic community now and in the future.

Go Flint and Go Blue!

Sapna V. Thwaite
Vice Provost for Academic Affairs
