Gender & Sexuality Theme Community

Gender & Sexuality Theme Community logo

The Gender & Sexuality Theme Community is a collaboration with the Center for Gender & Sexuality (CGS) offering gender-inclusive housing for members of the LGBTQIA+ community and supporters to live, learn and grow together through education, and peer-led programming, community outreach, and transformative dialogue. In addition, students will be invited to learn more about service through connecting with community organizations and/or participating in programming facilitated by CGS. Housed in our First Street Residence Hall, all first-year students are invited to join this community, regardless of major.

Advantages of joining the Gender & Sexuality:

  • Gain a sense of belonging and connectedness with residents that have diverse gender identities.
  • Increased sense of safety and support in the residential community.
  • Engage in intentional programs delivered by Peer Educators from the Center for Gender & Sexuality (retreats, fun activities, thought-provoking dialogue, and off-campus excursions).

To apply for acceptance into the Gender & Sexuality Theme Community, applicants must have been accepted for admission to UM-Flint and be a student at UM-Flint residing in First Street Residence Hall.

Students will also engage in workshops facilitated by the Center for Gender & Sexuality. All students are encouraged to consider participating in the Gender & Sexuality Theme Community. Please complete the following form to express interest in living with us and learning more. Apply Here!

Meet Our Campus Partners from the Center for Gender & Sexuality:

Pictured left to right: Samara Hough, Hilary Murmers, Sarah Devitt

Sam is a Flintstone and attended Hamady High School.  She is a mom of a boss daughter Tahlia and an adult son Chris.  Taking long walks on warm days with her spouse Eddie and watching cooking shows are things she enjoys in her spare time.

Hilary is a Virgo, a dog mom, and a passionate home cook. When she’s not building LGBTQ+ community among students, faculty, and staff on campus, you can probably find her swimming or curled up reading a good book or watching TV.

Sarah is a University of Michigan-Flint alumni who loves that she can continue being on campus as a staff member. She has two of the cutest, fluffiest cats named Colby and Blue (yes, like the cheese). In her free time, Sarah enjoys reading, binge-watching reality TV shows, and doing jigsaw puzzles.
