Educate Secondary Students & Help Them Grow into Adulthood
During middle and high school, you probably had special teachers who had a powerful impact on your education and life. If you’d like to be an exceptional teacher like them, UM-Flint offers degrees in secondary education that provide the training and experience you need to step into your classroom confidently.
UM-Flint’s secondary education degrees include:
- English Teacher’s Certificate program leads to a Bachelor of Science degree.
- Integrated Science Teacher’s Certificate program leads to a Bachelor of Science degree.
- Mathematics Teacher’s Certificate program leads to a Bachelor of Science degree.
- Social Studies Teacher’s Certificate program leads to a Bachelor of Arts degree.
We also offer two programs that prepare you for K-12 certification:
- Art Education program, which leads to a Bachelor of Science degree.
- Music Education program, which leads to a Bachelor of Music Education degree.
No matter which secondary or K-12 program you choose, it will have three major elements:
- Courses in the subject matter that you’ll teach
- Courses about education theories and teaching methods
- Hundreds of hours of hands-on experience as a student teacher
Related UM-Flint Degree and Certificate Programs
Besides the secondary and K-12 degree programs, the College of Arts, Sciences and Education offers other programs to prospective and working secondary educators:
- The Psychology Teacher’s Certificate Minor requires at least 20 credits.
- The Master of Arts in Educational Administration is a part-time program designed for principal preparation that combines online coursework with classes that meet one Saturday a month.
- The Education Specialist is a 20-month post-master’s program designed for working teachers and school administrators who want to increase their skills in leadership, communication, and administration.
- The Doctor of Education program is designed for practicing teachers and administrators and can be completed in as little as three years.
Accreditation
The teacher education program at the University of Michigan-Flint is approved by the Michigan Department of Education (MDE) and the Council for Accreditation of Educator Preparation (CAEP) to offer programs in elementary education, early childhood education, selected secondary education programs, and selected programs that prepare teachers for teaching in all grades.

Career Opportunities in Secondary Education
According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, the number of jobs for middle school and high school teachers should grow at about the same rate as the national average for all jobs through 2030.
The BLS projects there will be about 48,400 job openings for middle school teachers each year through 2030, and the latest median salary is $60,810. There will be even more openings for high school teachers, with the BLS projecting 77,400 job openings annually through 2030. The latest median salary for high school teachers is $62,870.
