About the Program

Esports is a new Recreational Services program that will launch in Fall 2020. UM-Flint students will have the opportunity to compete on teams in select multiplayer games and represent the University in the ever-growing esports scene. Students will help shape the game and league selections, while the esports program coordinator will help with the behind the scenes tasks. Popular esports games include League of Legends, Super Smash Bros., and Fortnite Battle Royale, among many others.

Just like any other sport, esports requires teamwork, practice, and physical exercise. Esports is also a social experience that brings students together and gives them a sense of inclusion. Other skills students can gain through esports include teamwork, strategic thinking and planning, managing success and failure, and time management.

Soon to be located in the UM-Flint Recreation Center, the esports lab is under development with plans for a Fall 2020 opening.

While specific times will be available for esport team practices, the lab will also be home to Intramural Sports tournaments and drop-in times for all students. Featuring 18 computers, two video review TVs, and a collaborative gaming area, all current students will be able to utilize the space with their own gaming licenses.  The layout in the above rendering is subject to change.
