Early Assurance Admission into DNP with MSN
Admitted students in the RN to BSN are eligible for early review by the School of Nursing Graduate Admissions Committee and potential Early Assurance Admission to the Doctor of Nursing Practice Program with a Master of Science in Nursing.
Experiential Learning
NUR 414 – Synthesis of Population Health Nursing for RNs and NUR 424 – Nursing Leadership and Management Experiential Learning for RNs include Experiential Learning projects. These projects consist of 16-hour (414) and 24-hour (NUR 424) EL in which you will complete hours in your community. NUR 414 has 16 hours that are completed “face-to-face” in the community setting. Some of the “face-to-face” components include portions of the Community Assessment assignment (e.g., windshield survey, key informant interviews), an environmental assessment of an individual’s home, and a teaching session to a group associated with an agency/organization.
Please try to avoid ACEMAP-type sites. ACEMAP sites are any sites associated with a hospital system or health care system, such as Beaumont, Spectrum, Trinity Health, McLaren, etc.
Below are some suggested (non-ACEMAP) sites for NUR 414- Community: Fire department, local library, preschool/Daycare, elementary/middle/high schools, pregnancy resource center, homeless shelter, food bank, health department, senior centers, assisted living facilities. Here is a potential script for NUR 414 that you can use when asking a site to allow you to complete your EL hours at their facility. You must be logged into Google with your UMICH email address to access this script.
Below are some suggested (non-ACEMAP) sites for NUR 424- Leadership: Academic settings such as colleges or universities, Long-term-care facilities or nursing homes, rehabilitation facilities, physician offices or outpatient clinics not associated with a hospital system, and jails. Here is a potential script for NUR 424 that you can use when asking a site to allow you to complete your EL hours at their facility.
Understand that if you choose an ACEMAP site, there are paperwork deadlines that are due three to six months before class begins. Please try to avoid any sites associated with a hospital system or health care system.
Please keep in mind that you must follow the rules/onboarding policy of the facility that will be your EL site. Check with your preceptor/facility to determine the requirement(s), if any, that you must meet to complete a student project in that facility. All requirements of the facility must be met before your class start date. For example, some may require you to wear an ID badge or complete an onboarding process before completing EL hours in the facility.
Before the beginning of the semester in which you plan to take either NUR 414 or NUR 424, you must complete a Required NUR 414 or NUR 424 Google Form that indicates where you are going to be living during these courses. This will help the faculty to make sure we have sites in your area. We suggest watching this 5-minute video that goes over this form and EL sites. You will also need to make sure your Complio account is fully completed before the first day of 414/424.
The NUR 414 and NUR 424 project includes a component of direct engagement to impact patient outcomes. From the University of Michigan-Flint’s point of view, an affiliation agreement (AA)/contract with the facility where the approved project will be completed is not necessary. However, if the agency/facility will not allow the NUR 414 and NUR 424 project without an AA/contract, the RN to BSN student must complete the required AA/Contract request form.
Please be aware that affiliation agreement finalization time can vary from several weeks to several months. We recommend verifying whether an affiliation agreement is required at your planned EL facility, a minimum of six months before the semester you plan to take NUR 414 and NUR 424.
Students must complete the following requirements before beginning NUR 414 and NUR 424:
- Possess a valid RN License with no restrictions.
- Successful completion of Complio and all the requirements.
- Required NUR 414 or NUR 424 Google Form (watch UMICH emails for the link)
- Complete any EL facility requirements (examples may include training, photo ID badge, etc.).
- Initiate and ensure completion of an affiliation agreement with the EL agency as indicated.
- All other prerequisite courses contribute to the knowledge base needed to ensure your success in NUR 414 and NUR 424. Make sure to work closely with your advisor to ensure that you have completed all prerequisite courses.
Requirements and deadlines may change. Please contact an RN to BSN advisor, Tiffany or Brooke, or the School of Nursing at 810-762-3420 with questions for the most up-to-date info regarding NUR 414 and 424.
Financial Aid
We highly recommend that you complete the visit UM-Flint Office of Financial Aid. Even if you do not plan to use federal financial aid, many scholarships require that you complete a FAFSA.
We highly recommend that you book a phone appointment with our financial aid department before the first day of class to make sure we have everything we need to award you any grants, loans, or scholarships you are eligible for.
Graduation and Getting Your Diploma
You must apply for graduation in the semester before your very last semester. Make sure to apply before the deadlines. Ensure you have met all graduation requirements by checking your My Degree Plan or speaking with an advisor. The application link and application deadline are posted on the Graduation page along with other important information about the degree conferral process. The university will review your graduation application after the semester. If your degree is conferred, you should expect to receive your diploma in the mail approximately six weeks after the semester concludes. Please review the Graduation page for detailed information on the deadlines and the graduation application process.
Note that graduation and commencement are two separate processes. Graduation is the process by which you request to have your degree awarded. Commencement is the ceremony that occurs after your program. A commencement ceremony is held at the end of each fall and winter semester. Whether or not to participate in the commencement ceremony is a student’s choice.
If you have any questions about the graduation ceremony, please contact the Registrar’s Office at 810-762-3344, [email protected].

Nursing License and Up to 30 Transfer Credits
Upon admission, advisors will look up your nursing license in the MI LARA system. If you have your license at the time of admission, we will enter your license into our system. Once you have completed your prerequisites, you can register for your 400-level classes. This will also award you up to 30 transfer credits to your transfer transcripts.
If you currently hold a nursing license outside the state of Michigan, please email your advisor a copy so we can add it to our system.
If the name you were admitted under is different than what is in the MI LARA system, please email your advisor a copy of your nursing license.
If you have yet to take your NCLEX upon admission or need to renew your license, no worries. You can still take nursing foundation courses and your general education courses with the University until you have a valid nursing license. You only need to pass your NCLEX before starting 400-level courses. Once you pass your NCLEX, please email your advisor a copy of your license as soon as it is available. Then we will add it to the database so you can register for 400-level courses and get up to 30 transfer credits based on how many you need to graduate.
Orientation
You’re welcome to sign up and visit our beautiful campus to explore the many opportunities we offer. Attending an in-person orientation is not required, but it is encouraged. To register, visit the Transfer Student Orientation page. You can also sign up for the online orientation through your SIS account under the “New Student Menu.” Once registered, it will be emailed to you.
Placement Exams
Placement exams may automatically appear in your Canvas account, but they are not always required. RN to BSN students often transfer in the necessary prerequisite courses, making these exams unnecessary. Before taking any placement test, check with your advisor to confirm whether it’s needed. We recommend bringing this up during your course planning appointment.
Required Grades for Courses in the RN-to-BSN Program
You must earn a grade of “C” (73%) or better in your Nursing (NUR/NSC) courses to meet the requirements for your program. For your General Education courses completed at UM-Flint, a passing grade of “D-” or above is acceptable. If you transfer to a general education course in, the grade must be a C or above.

Taking Classes at your Local Community College and the MTA Stamp

You should speak with Tiffany or Brooke to see if an MTA stamp or finishing out your general education requirements at the University of Michigan-Flint would be better.
You can look up how your classes will transfer.

There are no specific course fees.
