First-Year Merit Scholarships

Making your dream of a Michigan degree affordable!

At the University of Michigan-Flint, we want you to focus on starting your university experience strong—not on how you’ll pay for college. Available for first-year students coming out of high school, our Merit Scholarship program offers more funding for students with a strong academic record and a desire to excel. Awards range up to $10,000 a year, with limited full-ride awards available.

Applying for first-year student scholarships is easy at UM-Flint! You are automatically awarded scholarships at the time of admission based on your test scores and GPA. Our First-Year Merit Scholarships simplify the process of applying for and receiving awards, with:

  • No separate application to fill out—first-time students are automatically considered for Merit Scholarships when they apply to UM-Flint.
  • Immediate eligibility to receive scholarship funds for up to four years, for qualifying incoming freshmen who meet the minimum guidelines.
  • Instant information on which scholarship amount you qualify for—no waiting for an answer.

First-Year Merit Scholarships are awarded automatically based on your cumulative high school grade point averages as well as ACT and/or SAT test scores at application (with the exception of the True Blue Merit Scholarship). If your grade point average and/or test scores increase to qualify you for a larger award, you will receive notification that your award has been increased. Students who receive scholarships must maintain a minimum grade point average and credit hours at UM-Flint to have their awards renewed.

Some first-year students, including students who have dual enrolled at UM-Flint or participated in the DEEP or Early College programs may be eligible for continuing student scholarships as first-year students. Students are encouraged to learn about the full range of scholarships available for all academic and economic backgrounds when they become a degree seeking student.

*4 years, automatic consideration through August 31, 2024 for all but our True Blue Merit Award. Students admitted after March 1 will not be eligible for the True Blue Merit Award (full in-state award), but will still be eligible for our $10,000/annual award.

**Additional full tuition opportunities (covering full time residents, in-state tuition and mandatory fees) are offered through a competitive selection process to high ability students. The competition is held in February 2024 and is by invitation-only. To qualify for consideration for the competition you must have a complete admissions application (including test scores and transcripts) by December 1, 2023. UM-Flint reserves the right to make changes to scholarship and renewal criteria as needed.

*Eligible students admitted in Summer 2024 will begin receiving their awards in the Fall 2024 semester. Awards are only distributed in the Fall and Winter terms. Students admitted after March 1, 2024 will not receive our full in-state automatic merit award, but will still be eligible for our $10,000/annual award. Additional full in-state merit awards may be given following additional consideration by the Admissions Committee.
