What Is Direct Admission?
Direct admission allows high school students to be admitted to a college or university without requiring them to meet additional requirements or participate in a competitive application process.
Through our direct admission initiative, UM-Flint partners with high schools in local school districts to identify graduating seniors who meet the university’s academic admission criteria. Qualified students then receive an offer of admission without having to apply.
How Does UM-Flint’s Direct Admission Process Work?
UM-Flint’s direct admissions pathway streamlines the application process for high school seniors, removing any barriers that may stand in the way of their educational goals:
- Participating high schools in the surrounding areas share a list of graduating seniors meeting UM-Flint’s admission criteria each fall.
- UM-Flint then sends admission letters to the qualified students. It’s that easy!
After receiving an admission letter, students interested in attending UM-Flint should submit the following materials:
- Free online application.
- This helps the university verify their major, educational background, and contact information.
- Official high school transcript.
- SAT or ACT scores for full scholarship consideration (optional but strongly recommended).

The University of Michigan-Flint partners with 15 local school districts to build thriving community relationships and empower ambitious students to pursue their educational and professional goals at UM-Flint. Within the coming year, we plan to collaborate with more districts and extend the Direct Admission pathway to even more high school students across Michigan.

Next Steps for Direct Admission Students
After you’ve submitted your application, we recommend completing the following steps to stay on track:
- If you plan to enter UM-Flint in fall 2024, file the 2024-25 Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) and send it to UM-Flint using the school code 002327. The 2025-26 FAFSA is available for the following year on or before January 1, 2025. The FAFSA must be updated and filed each year after that.
- Register for new student orientation. UM-Flint does not require an enrollment deposit, so registering for orientation is your way of letting us know you’re ready to be a UM-Flint Wolverine! Orientation registration opens in early January.

What student information do partner high schools share with UM-Flint?
Partner schools share the names and contact information of qualified students with UM-Flint. Contact information is considered directory information under the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA). It may be shared unless the student or their parent/guardian—if the student is younger than 18—has opted out of such disclosures. No protected information is shared with UM-Flint, such as grades, standardized test scores, enrollment history, or disciplinary records.
Why must I apply if I’ve already been admitted?
We ask that you apply to collect important information about you and your educational plans, such as your up-to-date contact information, anticipated major, and your Social Security number, which is necessary to match your student record with your FAFSA results.
What scholarships are available to students admitted through the Direct Admission Pathway?
Admitted students are considered for all scholarships and grants ordinarily available to all new students. Learn more about UM-Flint’s financial aid offerings.
How long is my offer of admission valid? Am I able to defer my admission to a later term?
An offer of admission is only valid for the term listed on the admissions letter. If you plan to enroll for a later semester, you should submit an online application for that term.
If you register at another college or university after graduating high school, your application is considered based on our admissions criteria for transfer students.
My admissions letter says my admission is contingent on verifying my eligibility. What does this mean?
In rare instances, we may ask that you submit documentation in addition to your application and official high school transcript to determine whether you meet the university’s academic and nonacademic admissions criteria. If this is the case, we will notify you via email.
